Good Evening Falcon Family, Tomorrow, Thursday October 27th we will be having our annual Halloween parade and classroom parties. We will be starting our parade from the school and going down the street towards the post office. At the conclusion of our parade, we will re-enter the school and the students will have an opportunity to trick-or-treat with some community agencies and organizations. Visitors may not enter the building until the students are back at the school. All visitors to the school must sign in at the front entrance. Costume mask and weapons are not permitted by anyone. It also appears that some classrooms will be overcrowded and we may have to limit the number of people in there at a time. We will be asking that visitor depart from the school by 2:30. Thank you for your continued support of our students.

This morning in a response to a potential threat received from a neighboring school district, Braxton High County School took precautions and put students into lockdown, the West Virginia State Police responded and detained the potential threat. As a result of the State Police investigation, it was found to be a domestic situation and there was not a direct threat to students at Braxton County Schools. Lockdowns such as these are activated to keep all students and staff safe.

Because we take the safety and security of our students and staff as our priority, we immediately followed our response protocols for the threat. To our Braxton County Schools Community: Our district recently encountered two separate incidents of unauthorized personnel gaining access to our high school campus and one of our elementary school buildings. I want to assure you that we take the safety and security of our staff and students very seriously and it is regularly discussed among our administrative staff and board of education members. We also commit, through regular and ongoing discussions and trainings, to ensure that our schools are safe and secure, and places where teachers can teach and students can learn and grow, free from the worry of any type of intrusion. All WV schools and districts are required to have Safety and Crisis Management plans. Additionally safety measures and protocols are being implemented, studied, and duplicated so that districts have the best resources available to them. I have committed to working closely with local law enforcement and other emergency agencies to schedule trainings, drills, and community forums to provide opportunities for citizens to be involved with a productive approach to improving our safety and crisis management policies, responses, and communications. As you can imagine, there are numerous factors to consider when it comes to school safety. School safety can involve both external and internal threats, at many different levels. Daily measures are taken to ensure our schools follow basic protocols, including means to communicate to parents. Please understand that it is not always possible to provide a response or some of the details of a safety breach immediately following an incident. One challenge we face is the use of social media. There may be times that a staff member, student, or community member posts information before district or emergency services personnel has fully responded and/or investigated the incident. I understand parents want that assurance that their children are safe, but we are doing the best we can under sometimes difficult circumstances. With all that in mind, please consider the following that you can do to help us have a strong, secure school system: * Please immediately report to district staff or law enforcement any individual who exhibits unusual or threatening behaviors toward or near any school campus or during any school event, including extracurricular/athletic events; * Get to know your child’s friends and their families; establish a network to exchange information with other parents; * Talk with your children/student about reporting concerns to district staff or law enforcement; * Monitor social media use; discuss with your child/student about potential threats that they may have seen/heard; * Secure firearms in the home; * Model healthy/appropriate behaviors to stressful situations; demonstrate healthy ways to express anger or relieve stress; * Listen to your child/student and help them process any concerns they may have; * If you see something, say something! We will release more information on our website of resources that focus on preventing school threats and violence. School safety is everyone’s responsibility. Thank you for doing your part to ensure our schools remain safe, and thank you for your support! Sincerely, Dr. Rhonda Combs, Superintendent
